Ossifying Fibroma of the Mandible

The patients is a 46-year-old female. In the front side of the mandible the first symptom was pain in teeth #31 (24) and #32 (23) similar to pulpitis. The X-rays and CBCT showed a focus of osteolysis with radiolucent and radiopaque sheading elements mixed together in the area.

Endodontics and roots resections of #32 (23), #31 (27), #41 (25), #42 (26) were performed with backfill of the root canals with MTA. The tumour was removed with peripheral bone curettage to about one millimeter deep, using dedicated Augma degranulation burs. The bone defect was filled with 2 cc Bond Apatite®.

The tumor was taken to histopathology. It appeared to be between spongiosa and inflammatory bone. Diagnosis: Central ossifying fibroma of the mandible, COF.

Good healing of the wound was observed. The sutures were removed after 7 days. Moreover, after 6 months no recurrence or secondary inflammatory symptoms were observed, and the cortical buccal lamina was completely regenerated with good new bone growing inside the defect!
